The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of case documents associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House relented after months of trying to delay the bipartisan effort involving a case that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.
Swift Approval in Both Chambers
Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.
Citizens have waited long enough. The survivors have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Let the truth come out. Let transparency reign.”
Presidential Signature
This legislation next heads to Donald Trump for his endorsement. He signaled on the previous day that he would sign the measure.
Even though the president has for an extended period downplayed the outcry over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the legislation over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.
Support and Opposition
Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their advocates who were seated in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a GOP representative, who stated he worried the measure would disclose identifying details of witnesses, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
